Whats the best way to clean/soften/generally care for leather horse tack? - martin saddles

I've recently bought a new direction for my horse and I am wondering what to do with him, while his new mark?
Oil is not it?
Or soap?
Suggestions for the best tactic cleaner / soap around?
I used that day Carr and yellow saddle soap and Martin, but it is unclear, destruction of joints, and gives him a dirty look. Thanks
